The Hellbound Hepcats- No 2

Looking for some good old rockabilly that emphasizes the “billy” part but keeps the “rock” edge? Look no further then the new sophomore album by the Hellbound Hepcats, simply and obviously titled “No. 2”. They do a great job of keeping that old school country sound that is an essential part of rockabilly in their songs. These songs are truly catchy with a twangy guitar and drums and bass chugging along faithfully. Let me give you an example; the song “Underpants Dance” will have you dancing whether it’s in your underpants or not is entirely up to you! And it’s a guarantee that “Crazy Little Baby” and “Getting Nowhere Fast” will have you tapping your toes and singing along to the chorus. “Getting Nowhere Fast” is definitely the song I can relate to the most (probably not a good thing but what can you do right?) and sounds the most heart felt to me. I absolutely love the guitar riffs in “Rockabilly Queen”, it’s the sort of thing that anyone who’s listened to rockabilly for an extended amount of time looks for. It’s all about playing those instruments like your lives depend on it, especially in this day and age of auto tune.

As a visual artist I also must add that I love the style of the album everything from the quality of the photos to the font they use throughout the booklet and cover. The devil is in the details. And any band that wants to be taken even half seriously needs to take care of those visual details. These guys definitely do and you see the results when you look at the album in your hands.
My only complaint is that having seen them live in Toronto recently I can tell you the live show is much more energetic than the album shows. The album definitely has a more laid back, just chilling vibe, which is is great as well but different from what you’ll see live. Of course, it’s always a challenge for a band to translate what they do live to an album. That being said, this one is a keeper for sure. Go get one or two and if you’re lucky enough to have them visit your town please do go see these rockin’ Montrealers!
