Danny and the Wonderbras

I was soundchecking with my band Dee Ann and the Nightcaptains, for our gig at The Rambler, Eindhoven. Danny and The Wonderbra’s, from Germany, was the headlining band. I saw three wild looking men watching us soundcheck. Must be Danny and his companions. When we were done I walked up to them to introduce myself. They may be rough looking but they were very friendly and funny as well. They were interested in my band and my female singer heroes. Ofcouse I was curious about them too, for myself, but also for a Rockabilly-Online interview.

Of course my first question was: how did you come up with this name? Danny said he invented it, but he didn’t know what inspired him.
Danny and the Wonderbra’s started out five years ago as a school band, but with another bassplayer and drummer.  The current formation is Danny Wunschel: guitars, vocals. Matthias Kraus: doghouse bass, vocals. Torsten “Toschi” Neumaier: drums. Mattias and Torsten joined Danny in 2010. The band made three cd’s. Mattias and Torsten worked on the last two. The forth is on its way. They write their own songs, and play covers too giving them their own sound.

It was their first gig in The Netherlands. Those full time musicians play a lot in Germany. In between gigs, when they are on the road, they rehearse everywhere they can. The band knows a lot of fellow musicians in several German cities, where they can rehearse and can bring a box of beer as payment.

Once they were Wanda Jackson’s support act. Mattias says he saw her old pictures, this rockabilly lady with the giant guitar. But he realized later that she’s a little lady normal sized guitar. Danny says that there are not as many female Rockabilly heroes as there are men. So for nowadays female singers they have not so many female heroes to look up to.

I looked at the wall of the Rambler, where Danny and the Wonderbra’s had several Tshirts hanging, designed by Miss Luna Star who also designed the cd sleeve of “Rockabilly Party”. Danny

Their show is very energetic. They play songs from The Reverend Horton Heat next to “Hey good looking”. In fact different styles but their own sound makes everything fit altogether. Danny and Mattias sing in harmony most of the time. Well… take a look at the youtube we made:
