Candye Kane – Sister Vagabond (album review)

Candye Kane’s 11th cd, called Sister Vagabond,  I have been playing for the last few days. Candye teamed up with guitarplayer Laura Chavez, a young guitarplayer who is often compared with Stevie Ray Vaughan for her style and sound. I don’t like to compare music and musicians to others, but I guess I just did in a way.

Candye shows us she can use her deep powerful voice in many different styles, soul, swampy, sixties, blues etc. Raw, like in Brenda Lee’s “Sweet nothings” or warm like in the blues balad “Walkin’, talkin’ haunted house”. The cd cover actually is a drawing of Candye and Laura in front of a Haunted House. Great design. The first song, I think all the Burlesque gals should like, “I love to love you”. I can see them walk seductively on this rhythm and blues rhythm. I love how Candye uses food in her lyrics to write a song about love as in “Side Dish”. She did it before on her previous albums (Diva La Grande) in “All you can eat”. Not only about food but also on other aspects in her life she’s inspired to write about. This woman has been through a lot, and she expresses that in her songs. So from the heart you can say, but always strong and hardly sad.

Candye Kane and Laura Chavez

As I mentioned different styles are used for the songs on this album, but all caught in one picture frame by Laura’s wonderful guitarplay and -sound.

This cd contains many songs written by those two wonderful musicians, as well as some covers and a song written by Steve White who died during the making of this cd. And so there’s a little story behind every song on this cd, which you can read inside the cd sleeve.

Thomas Yearsley (The Paladins) is one of the many musicians who worked on this great album.

My verdict: I wanna play Sister Vagabond over and over again.
