Boys named Sue

Boys named Sue. If you like Johnny Cash songs, you can imagine, what kind of music this band plays.  Indeed, a Johnny Cash tribute band.

Boys named Sue

The boys come from Amsterdam (NL) and the band exists since 2001. After a few member changes you can hear an experienced band that can play all facets of Johnny Cash: the country-Cash, the rocking Cash, the Gospel-Cash and the American Recordings-Cash. The band members are Wouter van der Spek (guitar and vocals), Richard Hakkenes (guitar and vocals), Rob Ero (drums), Reijnier Terpstra (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Bokke Rypma (guitar and backing vocals).
Because my husband is a great Johnny Cash fan, we were very curious about a performance of the band, so we travelled to a tiny little village near our hometown.
Upon arrival we were already viewed from all sides because we didn’t belong to the locals, as we came from the city. It didn’t matter to us, we came to hear the band. It was a very small cafe and after tuning the guitars it turned out that the acoustic in such a small room was very good.
The band started off very quiet with a gospel song (very appropriate because it was a Sunday), but then continued with more up tempo songs and the audience was soon in the mood and there was much singing and dancing. Most of the songs were sung by Wouter, but also the other guitarists proved to have a perfect voice. The well-known song Jackson, back then sung by Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter, was beautifully polyphonic sung by the boys. The lack of a female singer was certainly not a loss.
After a lot of good songs to sing along such as Get Rhythm, Ring of fire, Ghostriders in the sky, Country boy (this is always popular in a small rural village) and the very good song Cocaine Blues, it was time for the last song. The band was introduced – how nice, every band member was called Sue….. (except the drummer Captain Rob) – and of course the song A boy named Sue was played, to the great amusement of the audience.
But it turned out that the evening wasn’t over yet, the audience kept asking for more. After consultation with the drummer, if he could play another song, he agreed with even 2 songs.
This was the well-known song Walk the line (known to a wider audience through the filming of Cash his life in 2005) and then eventually the last song, the gospel song  I saw the light.
Well, we saw it too boys!!
