Astrolites – Playing for keeps (album review)

Brand new 2nd album by a Swedish band called Astrolites.

The term high speed Rockabilly might frighten most of the rockabilly purists, bu no worries. This album is filled with some great mid tempo rock, wonderful surf instrumentals with nice beat changes, catchy singalongs “Devil woman” and Sonic like “Roll with the Dead” songs.

Definitely not for the weak hearted.

Tight production and good musicianship and a sandpaper vocalist that somehow reminds me of Joe Strummer.

The punkrock influences can be heard in the backing vocal arrangements. This band is really playing for keeps.

Now for a critical note: the choice of covers, Johnny Cash’s “ring of fire” and Johnny Horton’s “I’m a coming home” is a bit obvious and done by so many bands. My personal taste also prefers a double bass with less mid in it as it would really get the production pumping.

All in all a good album and a must have if you are into the rougher edgier kind of rockabilly. It wil Astro Lite up your life!
