Casablanca Carambol Company

Rock and roll and jive is in their blood! It may sound like a statement, a bit exaggerated but I’ll explain why I dare to shout it out loud.

First of all, Casablanca Carambol Company is a Belgian band from Lier (Antwerp). The bandmembers are Jan “Johnny” Mortelmans (vocals + acoustic guitar), Jan “Lazy Jean” Claes (guitar), Erik “Little E” Le Clercq (upright bass) and Pieter “Pierre” Vansteenbeeck (drums).

Their first cd has this great fifties looking sleeve designed by Little E. The cd looks like a small vinyl record. This alone makes it a great wanna have. It shows personality and character of the band and songs, which promises a lot.

And you won’t be disappointed hearing the first couple of songs, you can dance and jive to. Johnny’s way of singing reminds me of Sonny Burgess or on other songs a somewhat higher pitched Eddy Cochran with the Gene Vincent guitar sounds. They play a slow love song, I think inspired by the sound of “Sea of Love”.

If I didn’t know better I’d think I was listening to an original band, or a today’s band covering and sounding exactly like original bands. But these guys know how to write their own new songs and play it like they were mr. Cochran and mr. Vincent themselves.

So nice if people live the Rockabilly lifestyle, good if you dig those old tunes up and play it like they should sound, but hurray if you can write and play songs as if they were old tunes.

All songs written bij CCC, except for Nobody’s Woman, by Charlie Feathers.

A wanna have, I say!

They’ll be playing at the Cruise Inn Amsterdam, at Januari 8th, 2011.
