Showgirl Adventure: Rockabilly KISS-off!

Readers of this column may remember that my little troupe, The Jigglewatts, often teams up with the band Johnny Hootrock, and that together we were finalists to open for rock legends KISS.  Our wonderful fans voted us into the top five to be considered, but alas- KISS did not choose us.  But no matter!  We had planned to give our fans an energetic rockabilly themed extravaganza in celebration of their show of support.  We added a few special guests to the cast- all redheads by some lovely coincidence!

Coming all the way from Denver, Colorado to play Mistress of Ceremonies was the incredibly talented and funny Cora Vette (she likes to drive fast with her top down!).  Cora is an encyclopedia of dirty jokes, a first-class singer, and does one of the funniest Elvis impersonations I’ve seen.  Er, “Pelvis,” rather.

Many of her outfits are one-of-a-kind, hand crafted gems made from fancy metallic flake auto upholstery (yes, I’m jealous!).

Also joining us was the redheaded songbird and dancer Jolie Goodnight.  Jolie treated the crowd to a sweet Texas routine complete with cowboy boots and cowgirl sass.

Our third flame-haired guest, the deliciously dimpled Tynkerhell, is from the longest running burlesque troupe in Austin, Red Light Burlesque.  She likes to say that she is retiring, but now that I have her number, we’ll just see about that!

Tynkerhell!

I wasn’t planning on creating a new act for this show, but the lure of the fun and energy of a rockabilly soundtrack proved too tempting.  Plus, when I discovered a number of great rockabilly tunes with “Ruby” in the title, how could I resist?  I created a new number using a medley of three songs and lots of shimmy-tastic fringe.

In the second half of the show, Johnny Hootrock took the stage and we performed our go-go acts with them.  Now, we’ve always incorporated a bit of burlesque striptease in our go-go antics with the Hootrock boys, and we really wanted to play it up for this show.  Tynkerhell shone during “Vodka Shot,” when she held a tray of four shots with one hand, pouring them down the rockers’ gullets in turn, while peeling simultaneously out of her corset and skirt with one hand!

We’ve each adopted signature songs by Johnny Hootrock, and one of mine is “Rockin’ Oldsmobile,” about a temperamental jalopy, as you may have guessed. (The resemblance is purely coincidental.)  The song is mostly slow and grindy, with a few good, fast shimmy breaks thrown in.  I really wish I had one of Cora Vette’s upholstery outfits for this one!

For the final encore song, Hootrock played “The Crusher,” a heavy and driving tune about the drama of pro-wrestling (???).  We all revisited the stage in our shimmy costumes, shaking and quaking in a big grand finale!
