Chitchat with Rowland Salley

Rowland Sally

He is known as the bass player of Chris Isaak’s Silvertone. But he is also a painter and a songwriter. His solo album “Killing the Blues” was released in 2005. It’s a smooth and touching collection of blues/ folk songs. The song “Killing the Blues” has been covered by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on their 2007 album, Raising Sand. It later earned a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in February 2009.

Many of his paintings have been reproduced as postcards. Much of Salley’s artwork is inspired by local landmarks such as Alcatraz and the Presi dio’s bleached-white homes.

Lucky for me, Rowland had the time for a quick chat:

You’ve been touring for many years now, all over the world. What’s your favorite country (next to the US) to play?

I am grateful for the chance to go to any country and play music.  and equally fascinated.  To actually see the places you’ve only heard about allows you a much better feeling for its history….how it really might have been. Or why. There is so much to discover.  If people turn up to see the band… I’m naturally going to call that my favorite place to play!  Do you have time for holidays? Where would you go to?
I have not much time to plan vacations…but the current answer (because it happens to be on my mind this second):  Procida.

What’s your favorite dish you like to cook yourself?
Spaghetti Puttanesca.

Do you have other passions next to music?
I love to waterpaint and to fish in the ocean.

You met a lot of celebrities already. Who would you like to meet very much?
Nikola Tesla but I hope that the chances of that remain slim this morning.

If you could make three wishes, what would they be?

1.  That the “colors don’t fade”!
2.  I wish I could turn back the clock and have a couple of conversations with people I love who aren’t on the planet anymore.
3.  That everyone try as hard as they can to evaluate the information supplied by the media.

If you have the time… We have a special item in our magazine: What artist say about new artists. So I’m asking you to take a quick peek at this youtube movie: of a Brazilian young woman Baby Rebbel.

I watched her “funnel of love” clip with Koti.  I like the song and their delivery of it a lot.  I would go to a nightclub to see her play….and it would be a fine thing to play bass on a project with her.
