Rockabilly is taking over the Rotterdam (again)

All of my 22 years here on earth I’ve lived in Rotterdam. I grew up with wild rockin’ stories about jivin’ in Jailhouse Place, and late nights at The Flaming Star. But those places are no more 🙁 So I traveled all over the country for party’s, thinking that rockabilly in Rotterdam is gone. Until the last few months!

It started with a event called “De Rotte Tiet”. In english, translates to ” the rotten titty”. But let me explain! The name came from a parody of The Titty Twister, from From Dusk Till Dawn! Born from the brains of Jesse van der Heijden and Dennis Klootwijk, the plan is to organize a party, where you can just be yourself. Guys can be just classy lads, girls can be pretty ladies! Not like the disco, hipster and hiphopin’ folk on the regular places. The evening is filled with dirty Rock’n’Roll and Rockabilly, boppin’ tracks! Hans Worst is there to still you’re hunger with sauce, right from the grill. You can have you’re picture taken! And it goes on till late! I know, because I spinned the wax there! I danced like crazy when I didn’t spin. But the best part, I saw the older generation rockers and the newer generation in one place! So I highly recommend to go there! And I Look forward to the next edition!

Showgirl Adventure: 10 Summer Glamour Tips

Posted by RubyJoule On July - 30 - 2011

Once upon a time, I found myself on tour with the blazin’ hot band, Johnny Hootrock, barrelling through the even hotter Death Valley (117 degrees during the day!) in a darling RV, with a less than darling broken air conditioner.  When we pulled up to the honky-tonk in Arizona, my cohort Coco Lectric and I had to quickly get into glamour mode and put on a top-notch show for those fine folks.  That was some challenge, let me tell you!  Just a couple of hours earlier, we’d decided bikinis were the only acceptable outfits to wear on this trip, and had taken to spraying ourselves down with water bottles to keep from spontaneously combusting!

Coco and Ruby in the desert...

Now that was a rather extreme situation, but since we seem to be having a global heat wave, I wanted to share some tricks I’ve learned for maintaining that glamorous demeanor, from growing up in Texas…

How to become a pin-up

Posted by Miriam On February - 23 - 2011

Maybe you ask yourself for years now, how these pin-up models always look so shiny.
Well, I found the answer for you.
Check out the video, plan some time to practice and before you know it, you’re a fifties pin-up yourself.

It may seem very difficult, the proper application of these pin-up makeup, but it isn’t.
All you need are good basic makeup stuff, some patience and of course a steady hand and within 10 minutes you’ll have a great result.
Here’s how to channel your inner pinup. A modern day pinup should channel the ’50s by way of cat-like eye makeup, bold lips and wavy hair. A red, pillowy pout smacks of sensuality. Make bright lipstick and liner last by first applying foundation and translucent powder to bare lips, then create a rounded or pointed cupid’s bow with lip liner (add definition by drawing just outside the lines with a flesh-toned concealer pencil).
Select a snow-white or gold shadow for the lid, and rim the top and bottom lashes with black liquid liner, extended a few millimeters beyond the outer corners. Add dimension with a dark shadow applied in the crease and blend well with a contouring eye shadow brush. A brow pencil a few shades darker than your natural hair will make your arches appear more defined.
The pinup’s skin has a paler, more powdery finish than the average gal and a strategically drawn faux mole under the eye lends a sexy touch. A heavier foundation will help you achieve this look.
Good luck with it and maybe we’ll see your picture on the website…..

Back from the abyss of glitter to ring in the new year!

Posted by GingerSnaps On January - 2 - 2011

Ok, so I’ve been out of the loop for a while and haven’t had a moment to breathe much less write. But with the new year comes a new start and so many new opportunities!

So What the hell has been going on?

Well one of the biggest shows my burlesque troupe (www.blackwidowburlesque.com) has ever undertaken happened in November! It was the first annual Spanksgiving! A burlesque festival and it was a huge success! We had a great show, a lot of fun, and are really looking forward to doing it next year bigger and better than this year! And….we totally created the best new holiday deity, the Spanksgiving Turkey! He wanders about the festival doling out spankings to all the good boys and girls!

Roz’ New Years Pinup Beauty Tip

Posted by rozfriday On December - 31 - 2010

M.A.C. Cosmetics has released four fabulous rockin’ new shades perfect for your pinup pout!  My favorite for the New Year is an amazing highly pigmented pink with POP called “Something New”!  This creamy opaque coverage lipstick glides on super smooth like all of M.A.C.’s wonderful lipsticks, and it looks especially fabulous with cooler skin  tones, though you can still get away with it if you run a bit warmer in that department!  Also excellent for cool skin tones is the purple shade, “Style Curve”.  Their new redder shade is “Cockney” which looks great with a bit of gold in your wardrobe and the sexy “Neon Orange” is amazing for you ladies that like to keep your wardrobe HOT with sun soaked colors, and even hotter if you’re wearing that black wiggle dress and really want to turn heads!  So ring in the new year in glamour-puss style and don’t forget to use a lip brush for perfect pinup lips!

Wert Whirl

Posted by Miriam On December - 29 - 2010

Wert Whirl is a “Retro Sexy” photography project by two talented San Antonio artists.
This duo is Shannon Toy (hair and make up) and Jim Lander (photography).
They know how to mix photography with beauty and fun. Wert Whirl exists only 1 year, but they already shoot with names like Kitten Kaboom, Phil DeVine, Mizuz Inkoholik and Keke Noir.
Do you know what “Wert Whirl” is? It’s the whistle, that guys give to girls. The whistle sounds like a slide whistle and the sound resembles the word itself.
I asked Shannon a few questions about their project.

How you two got together to start this project?
I approached Jim about a Makeup Artist job. I had noticed he went to Taft High School in San Antonio, TX, as we did except one year ahead of us (I have a fraternal twin sister). My sister was in band with him actually. So, Jim set up a meeting after conversing on the phone with me about goals. He said I think I have something better in mind for you! Then we decided on themed photography pin up style. I came up with the name hard to say but you whistle it! Wert Whirl, the old wolf whistle, but in the 1950’s it was complimentary not crass. I was surprised that no one has thought to use it before us.

Tell us about your career in the past?
My first experience with the business was doing hair for a Betsy Johnson fashion show at a club in Dallas. Many seasoned hair stylist were amazed at what I had done to the models hair. Then I was asked to do hair and makeup for a calendar photo shoot through MySpace. I met a fashion designer at the shoot and she told me to get on Model Mayhem and start testing with photographers. I spent a year November 2007 to November 2008 trying to figure out where I belong in this field. Then I found my friend whom I have known for many years through the Rockabilly scene in, Dallas, TX., Wes Wolfe on Model Mayhem and we started a business up there called Valley of the Dolls Glamour, Pin Up and Retro Photography.  I met my husband, got married, and got pregnant we moved back to San Antonio, TX.

Roz’ Pinup Beauty Tip for December:

Posted by rozfriday On December - 17 - 2010

This month’s featured beauty tip regards a product that every pinup girl should be familiar with:  Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion.  This silicone infused wonder product comes in three finishes: the original nude finish, a tawny matte finish and champagne shimmer.  All three products are applied before you put on any shadow, liners, falsies, or mascara and will ensure that not only is your eye makeup crease-free and more vibrant in color (a problem when you look at the eyeshadow palette and then apply it to your skin, usually), but that it LASTS.  This product will give you perfect pinup eyes every time and you won’t have to touch up your eye makeup, whether you are enjoying an all day car show outdoors, or you’re at an indoor photo shoot!  Be sure to apply it all the way up to your eyebrow arch for great lasting highlights under your brows as well as under your bottom lash line to help that eye shadow stick!  Available online through most beauty supply stores or in-stores at Sephora and Ulta, etc. the primer potion will run you around 18 bucks for a 0.34 oz. bottle and it lasts a long time!  Incidentally, Urban Decay also makes a wonderful lip primer, which is this pinup girl’s favorite way to keep perfect a perfect pinup pout all day long!

Clara Bow lips

Joan asks, “I’d love to be able to wear “flapper” style lipstick ala Clara Bow. But I can’t ever seem to get the hang of doing it. How do they get their lips to look so small?”

First of all, here’s a pic of Clara Bow for a reference:
