Max Bloom’s CAFE NOIR

Posted by Dee-Ann On September - 6 - 2013

Max at night“Maxwell Bloom like a half forgotten tune, walks the street beneath a cloudy day.       A man out of season, a force beyond reason, searching for a past that got away.”

So begins the theme song for an unfinished film Lost Angeles about a hard boiled detective searching the present for clues to his identity from the past. Max’s untold story would ultimately provide the genesis for the café named in his honor – Max Bloom’s Café Noir.

So somewhere in downtown Fullerton (California USA) there is this 1940’s/50’s themed coffeehouse called Max Bloom’s Café Noir. Owned by Kevin.

Lipstick on your Vinyl?

Posted by Rocky On February - 26 - 2013

It was the last weekend of my vacation, and I just had my last dance lesson on Friday. And i thought that there was nothing to do, nowhere to go for a rockabilly party. But i heard through the grapevine that there was a boppin’ party going on in dB’s in Utrecht. So I looked it up. On the website I read that it was called “Boppin’ The Rock”, which is organized once in a few weeks. 3 Bands were playing that night. This time it was The Buckshots from Belgium, The Slapback Johnny’s from The Netherlands and The Whiskey Daredevils from the USA. And I found out some of my friends were going also, so I decided it was best to go too 😉

It was pretty much next to the station, but the door was on the other side. When i walked in I didn’t know where to go, I’ve never been here before. So i walked straight to the bar 😛 After waiting 20 minutes or so, the doors opened to see the band. The Buckshots were first up.  They looked like a country/Rockabillyband, with a lovely female vocalist. After one song, my friends cam dripping in, one by one. They’ve been to dB’s before to see JD Mcpherson.

Showgirl Adventure: Montreal Burlesque Fest 2011, pt. 2

Posted by RubyJoule On December - 25 - 2011

We must have had more fun Friday night than we knew, because no one could be roused until 1:00pm on Saturday!  I popped a flower in my hair and walked with Michelle L’Amour and David around the corner to Roberto’s for lasagna and cappuccino; the breakfast of burlesque champions.  They had an awfully tempting selection of gelato too – perhaps we would come back later for that.  The front of the café was open to the sidewalk, so we sat in the delicious early afternoon breeze and watched passersby.

Later that day, some mutual friends of the festival from Las Vegas, Heather and Rolando, drove me into Old Port, the historic district of Old Montreal.  Eroded cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, art galleries, and umbrella festooned sidewalk eateries marked this wonderful part of the city.  The solid old stone buildings towered on either side of the streets, at once gracious and imposing.

Since Heather and Rolando had not joined us for the “breakfast of burlesque champions” earlier, we stopped at a little sidewalk bistro, Le Sauvagine, with tables nestled beneath giant orange umbrellas.  I ordered a rosé and gazed at the people passing by from behind my big dark sunglasses.  Then… a familiar figure emerged from the crowd.  Rolando exclaimed, ‘look who it is!’ The lovely Roxi D’Lite (BHOF Reigning Queen of Burlesque 2010) was headed our way.

Showgirl Adventure: Montreal Burlesque Fest 2011, pt. 1

Posted by RubyJoule On December - 24 - 2011

I got off the plane in Montreal and breezed through customs and immigration with ease, but I was already late for the press conference that started at 5:30.  I found my fair cohort, MissCoco Lectric, at the luggage carousel and we headed to the ladies’ room for a quick change, Wonder Woman style.

Scarlett James’ darling husband, David, was waiting outside to whisk us to the venue.  As we waltzed out with our glittery cocktail dresses and suitcases, a couple of bystanders snapped photos.  I guess no one wears cocktail dresses to the airport anymore!

Bluegrass Outlaw party

Posted by Mars On February - 4 - 2011

A brand new stage called Heidegger in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) opened up just 2 weeks ago. I decided to check the place out during the Bluegrass Outlaw Party.

Interior was punk and rock proof, loads of concrete wooden floor panels so a blind horse could’t do any damage inside (hope that’s an English expression. If not you catch my drift). There was a good crowd for a Wednesday night  and great atmosphere and vibe. It al felt like a reunion as there where loads of familiar faces.

Fournicators was supposed to be the first band but could’t make it (wonder what they where doing).

Amsterdam BeatClub’s 7,5 year anniversary

Posted by Dee-Ann On October - 22 - 2010

Amsterdam BeatClub is known for promoting the sound of The Golden Era of Music: the rare and beautiful lost treasures of the 50’s-early 70’s. These parties often feature live music, Burlesque-shows, à Go-Go-dancers and cult veejay-visuals.

In 2003, as a reaction to the poor nightclub-action at that time, a group of friends and colleague-deejays (Ir.Vendermeulen, Charley Rhythm, Wilf Plum, Eddy de Clercq, Piet Popcorn) started Amsterdam BeatClub.  First starting out at ultra-small underground venues, Amsterdam BeatClub soon turned out to be a huge succes and with that more parties came and venues grew. Nowadays Amsterdam BeatClub is produced by “The Dynamic Duo” Ir.Vendermeulen and Charley Rhythm and it’s widely considered an important Dutch organisation for Vintage Music, with a steady following from around the country and outside.

At Amsterdam BeatClub you can expect an un-beat-able Cocktail of the very best Vintage Music: Greasy Soul, Swingin’ Sixties Sounds, Rhythm ‘n Blues, Horny-Hammond-Jazz, Beat, Twist à-GoGo, 60’s Garage, Psych, YéYé, Steaming Ska, Exotica, Rock ‘n Jive, and Cool Cover versions!

Many great bands and artists have performed over the years: The Sonics, Big Jay Mc.Neely, Arsen Roulette & The Drugstore Cowboys, Os Mutantes, Hullabaloo, Dee Ann & the Nightcaptains, Sue Moreno, The Ragtime Wranglers, The Reno Brothers, The Phantom Four, WestHell 5, Messer Chups, T-99, The Five Aces, to name just a few.
Often theme-parties are organised where the crowd dresses completely up to the dresscodes: 20’s Depression / Western / Burlesque / Soirée Francaise / Space-Age / Tiki / Psychedelic / Spy-Fi / Halloween / etc.

And now, on Nov.6th, it’s time to celebrate Amsterdam BeatClub’s 7,5 years anniversary with a GRAND PARTY at Paradiso Bovenzaal!
ABC-deejays Ir.Vendermeulen and Charley Rhythm will be spinning the best Vintage Wax from their extended record collections, beautiful and rare cult-visuals will be show on the big screen and 2 top surf-bands will play live sets: The Messer Chups (Russia) and The Anacondas (Amsterdam). On the same night The Anacondas are celebrating their 10th anniversary with the release of their new album “BadBuzz” !

The Sheppey Rock and Roll club

Posted by Dee-Ann On September - 30 - 2010

Last summer I played with my band at The Sheppey Rock ‘n’ Roll Club in the UK. We were invited by the club managers Dave and Johanna Norris. Very nice people who are passionate about Rock and Roll music. When we arrived we were impressed by the original classic interior, the massive dancefloor and the wonderful stage. It would be a fantastic night.
