Donna Loren – Donna does Elvis in Hawaii (album review)

We’ve got a request by the Bender Music Group, if we would write a review about the new EP by Donna Loren. Who is Donna Loren, you’ll wonder. Well, I must admit, I had never heard from her before. I’m always up for Elvis songs, so I was a bit curious about this EP.
And what a surprise, Donna isn’t a one-day-fly, but she’s in the showbizz since her childhood!

Donna was born in 1947 in Boston, USA, and began her singing career at the early age of five. At age 8, she sang her first commercial for Meadow Gold Ice Cream and by the age of ten, she appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club TV Show. Donna’s popularity heightened in 1963 when she was selected to be the first and only “Dr Pepper Girl.”  She promoted the soft-drink company for five years on the radio, in a huge billboard campaign, magazines and personal appearances. Her big break catapulted her to bigger screens, namely five prominent singing/acting roles in popular teen motion pictures alongside Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Tommy Kirk, Deborah Walley and many other popular stars. Donna also appeared on numerous iconic television shows throughout the sixties and she was also the featured female vocalist on the wildly popular weekly ABC show Shindig and she  appeared with Bobby Rydell as a regular on The Milton Berle Show. In 1968, she was chosen by Danny Thomas and Aaron Spelling to have her own television series entitled, Two for Penny.  However, at the height of her career, Donna decided to retire from show business, get married, and devote her energies to raising a family.

During her career she released many albums; in 2009 she recorded an album of her best tracks of the 80’s together with James Burton and the TCB (Elvis)band.

Recently she released the 4-song EP entitled “Donna does Elvis in Hawaii” consisting of four songs recorded previously by Elvis, namely Teddy Bear, Loving You, One Night and her new single, “Merry Christmas Baby”.
The EP starts with Merry Christmas Baby. A bluesy kind of Christmas song, very bright and nicely sung. The instrumental intervals are very nice and especially the saxophone and piano.
Teddy Bear and Loving You are not my favourite Elvis songs, I like it more up tempo.
But in the implementation of Loving You, you can learn that this is a woman with much life experience. In Teddy Bear Donna is only accompanied by guitar, this gives a special twist to the song.
A worthy ending to the EP is One Night. I was a little sceptical of this number, especially when you know the version of Elvis (and then I mean the raw version of the ’68 Comeback Special when he cried out all of his feelings). But the implementation of Donna is impressive!
She clearly puts a lot of feeling in the song and it shows off.
If you’re looking for a swinging album, you better find something else. But when you’re planning a romantic evening with your loved-one, it’s the perfect sound.
