All of my 22 years here on earth I’ve lived in Rotterdam. I grew up with wild rockin’ stories about jivin’ in Jailhouse Place, and late nights at The Flaming Star. But those places are no more šŸ™ So I traveled all over the country for party’s, thinking that rockabilly in Rotterdam is gone. Until the last few months!

It started with a event called “De Rotte Tiet”. In english, translates to ” the rotten titty”. But let me explain! The name came from a parody of The Titty Twister, from From Dusk Till Dawn! Born from the brains of Jesse van der Heijden and Dennis Klootwijk, the plan is to organize a party, where you can just be yourself. Guys can be just classy lads, girls can be pretty ladies! Not like the disco, hipster and hiphopin’ folk on the regular places. The evening is filled with dirty Rock’n’Roll and Rockabilly, boppin’ tracks! Hans Worst is there to still you’re hunger with sauce, right from the grill. You can have you’re picture taken! And it goes on till late! I know, because I spinned the wax there! I danced like crazy when I didn’t spin. But the best part, I saw the older generation rockers and the newer generation in one place! So I highly recommend to go there! And I Look forward to the next edition!

Kinky Meets Sugarcoated

Then Schorem moved his barbershop to a bigger store! More barbers, more customers, less lines in front of the store. I’ve been in their new shop, its bigger, more wall decorations and more space to work for the barbers. And not to mention, the have an outside latrine šŸ˜‰ For those that are new here, i wrote an article on Schorem earlier: https://www.karto.nl/?p=8666

Kinky hairdressers, who have been there for a while, opened the displaywindow next door for small, temporarly exhibits. Everything can be displayed, from pictures to clothing. And that had to be celebrated. So the called Liptease and the Backstreet Crackbangers for a band, and called Sugarcoated to bite the bullet to be the first to fill the display window with beautiful pictures of people in 50’s clothing and cool vintage hairstyles!

But what is sugarcoated? Vivian kramer gezegd Freher started Sugarcoated in September 2013, and since then its big business! Her idea was to open a photo studio and make pin-up en vintage inspired photo’s, in ultimate fifties style, with a large doses of humor! She wants every picture to be unique, no imitation of some fifties poster. How does it work? You first

email with Sugarcoated, to talk about what you want in youre picture(glamorous/extraordinaire, innocent/sexy). On the day of the shoot, you get a good glass of whiskey(for the men, prosecco for the lady’s). When you’re all set, the visagist/hairstylist make sure you have the perfect look. And she doesn’t do only this, but Vivian also makes professional vintage pictures for magazines all over the world! She just moved to a new permanent studio, which will open in July.

Of course, Vivian was at the party, to make the pictures.

The party itself was great! Met a lot of people, made new friends! Danced, of course! Liptease did their best to fill up the dance floor, like they always do! They threatened us with stopping if we didn’t dance! (as a joke of course). After that, nobody left the floor! Not that we wanted to šŸ˜€

We didn’t want to stop, but it had to eventually. So some of us decided to do a drink at the Tiki’s bar, where i hadn’t be in 3 years because all the rockers suddenly disappeared. It seems they made a sudden reappearance! It was a great night.

They call it the female answer to Schorem. They use “Where bombshells get their nails done!” as tagline! Warning, for ladies only! If you’re a lady, you want to get you’re nails done, its like common ABC. But where to go? The Leopard Lounge, opened by Irene Westerbeek and her businesspartner, works without appointment. Just walk in the shop, sit and relax while the girls work on you’re nails. And not only are they nail artists, the lounge also offers a wide range of unique beauty products! I can’t tell more, because where

Schorem has a no female policy, in this lounge no man is allowed! What i can tell is that they have a lot of female customers, that are

very proud to show of their nails when they had them done!

So my conclusion? Rotterdam can be added to the list of Rock and Roll/Rockabilly city’s!
